This tool visualizes weather data from the German Weather Service (DWD) for VFR pilots. The core value proposition is resolution (2.1km grid, ~542,000 cells covering most of Europe) and recency (updates within minutes of new model runs).

Maps

Weather — Significant weather phenomena (fog, drizzle, rain, snow, thunderstorms)
Ceiling — Cloud base height (colors similar to GAFOR categories)
Visibility — Horizontal visibility
Temperature — 2m temperature
Radar — Simulated radar reflectivity
Precipitation — Rain/snow intensity
Convection — CAPE thunderstorm potential
Wind — Wind speed and direction at multiple altitudes
Thermals — Thermal strength, usable climb height, Cu cloudbase, and bumpiness index for soaring and GA pilots

Local Forecasts

Meteograms — Up to 5-day forecast for 1,700+ airfields and 4,300+ cities: ceiling, visibility, wind, temperature, precipitation and flight category at a glance. Cloud structure built from 28 vertical layers up to 10,000ft. Hours 0–48 use high-resolution ICON-D2, hours 49–120 extend via ICON-EU. Includes crosswind calculation based on runway data for airfields. Tap any location on the map to jump there.

Route

Cross-Section — Vertical profile along your route from surface to FL100 with 48 hours of animation. Shows cloud cover heatmap, terrain profile, VFR/IFR clearance lines, freezing level, and wind barbs at 8 altitudes. Includes a head-/tailwind analysis table that highlights the optimal cruise altitude per leg. Supports multi-waypoint routes with draggable map markers and PDF export.

Synopsis — AI-generated weather briefing per aviation zone with a 5-day outlook broken into morning / afternoon / evening timeblocks.

Data Sources

This app combines three DWD models and ECMWF open data:

Hours 0–14: ICON-D2 RUC (Rapid Update Cycle)
Updated every hour with 15-minute time steps – ideal for nowcasting

Hours 15–48: Conventional ICON-D2
Full model run every 3 hours with 2.1 km resolution

Hours 49–120: ICON-EU
European-scale model at ~7 km resolution, extends the forecast to 5 days

Hours 121–360: ECMWF Open Data (IFS HRES & AIFS)
Global model at 0.25° (~28 km) resolution, extends temperature, precipitation, ceiling, convection, wind, and isobars to 15 days. CC-BY-4.0 license.
