Storm cells (observed)

Real-time convective cell detection and tracking from DWD's KONRAD3D system. Every 5 minutes, DWD's radar network scans for organised cells and publishes each one as a polygon with severity, hail/gust/heavy-rain flags, cell speed, and a 60-minute forecast track with uncertainty ellipses.

This is a live observation, not a model forecast. Unlike the simulated Radar map (which shows what ICON-D2 predicts hours ahead), the Storms map shows the cells DWD's radar is watching *right now* and their extrapolated motion over the next hour. The forecast cone on each cell is the convex hull of DWD's 1σ position uncertainty ellipses — pilot-familiar FAA hurricane-cone convention. Empirically only ~39% of cells actually stay inside their 1σ cone; treat it as one plausible corridor, not a boundary.

Best combined with the simulated Radar for anticipation and the CAPE map for the underlying fuel. Coverage: Germany plus a modest buffer into border regions. Cells outside DWD's radar range don't appear.
